There was only one locality left for us to visit in Skåne, where Xanthoria calcicola had previously been reported growing epiphytic; on Fraxinus sp.
Collection label “Skåne: Rinkaby: kyrkogården, på ask. 1944-06-19 Ove Almborn“ (Herb. LD).
We investigated the church yard walls and trees on July, 18 2017. We found a few thalli on the church yard wall, but not on any trees. The ornamental trees are mostly Acer sp. However, we observed remnants (stumps) of very large trees by the church yard wall where we observed X. calcicola. They had been growing almost inside the wall. (Center of attached photo.)
Perhaps they had been removed because they threatened to damage the church yard wall. And maybe they were the very trees where X. calcicola was growing back in 1944!
